I decided to post this idea on a Sunday because that is probably when I personally would choose to prepare it. Â We all know we should include two serves of fruit in the lunch boxes of our children, but sometimes it can be really hard to coax a child to eat a whole apple, or a whole banana, or a whole orange, or a whole anything. Â We are very lucky, our school Prep. realizes this and each Monday we all take in three pieces of fruit to be placed in the class fruit basket. Â Each morning the teacher aide cuts up a selection of fruits and places them on several plates for the children to share at Fruit Snack. Â This way the children have an opportunity to sample fruits that maybe their family isn’t in the habit of buying and they don’t have to eat A WHOLE anything. Â Selecting a small piece of fruit to try is far less daunting than being faced with a large apple, and kids are often more likely to try something new if they see their friends doing it in a relaxed environment. And as “The Wiggles” keep telling us, fruit salad is “Yummy Yummy”.
But if you are looking for a creative way to encourage your child to eat more fruit, why don’t you try these fruit kebabs.  I recommend using paddle pop sticks for this one because kebab skewers could do a lot of eye damage if they became swords in a pirate fight, and kids have little accidents and we wouldn’t want them falling on something sharp.  You could also include some yoghurt for dipping if you wanted to.  I chop up my fruit on a Sunday afternoon and pop it in the fridge to use throughout the week.  Depending on the fruit you choose it should last a few days, especially if your sprinkle it with a little lemon juice.  Obviously bananas aren’t going to last in this situation, but melons and citrus fruits do really well, and  I usually chop apples on the day I am going to use them.
