This Week’s Lunch Box Filler

Homemade Munchables

Munchables, or Lunchables, depending on where you live, are those lunch box snacks you find in the refrigerator section of your supermarket, cleverly packaged in brightly coloured boxes (to make them look bigger I suspect), and often with a  trendy looking character on the box.  I’m not targeting any brands here, I honestly couldn’t tell you what brand makes them, but I do object to being asked to pay anywhere from $38.60 to $46.75 per Kilo for cheese and crackers, don’t you?!  That’s mighty expensive cheese!  There’s a variety for you to choose from….some have ham, and some throw in a confectionery item like M&M’s or Jelly Babies, and yes, they are the more expensive ones, but they are, in my opinion,  still severely over-priced.  A great idea, but still over-priced.
So, I decided to make my own.  If your kids need the enticement of attractive packaging to encourage them to nibble at their lunch, why not buy a few cheap containers with sections in them, and put a few stickers on the outside.  Or, use a few brightly coloured patty papers to divide everything.  If you do use patty papers, make sure you pack them in a shallow container so they don’t spill out everywhere.  By packing your own, you get to decide what goes into your munchables, and you can even throw in a little treat if you like.  Part of the excitement is finding out what surprise mum or dad have put in today.  I usually go for M&Ms or Freckles in ours.  And I  know with my kids, if  I give them a little of everything instead of one big sandwich they are more likely to eat it.
